The American Gothic series is below.
Grant Wood visited a friend in Eldon. They drove around town looking for subjects Wood might like to paint.
Grant Wood, painter of
American Gothic and many other terrific works of art.
This window attracted Wood's attention because it was big and an unusual shape to find in a small house.
This is the house.
A mobile home is now adjacent to the house. In their respective periods, the present-day mobile home and what became the
American Gothic house probably represent the same economic level.
Wood's sister and his dentist were his models. Neither was pleased with how they appeared in the painting. A volunteer worker at the house site said that the dentist was so angry he never spoke to Wood again.
A reproduction of the painting.
The
American Gothic House Center and the house itself.
A Barbi and Ken parody.
An absolutely classic Priscilla and Elvis parody. It's said that
American Gothic is the second-most parodied painting in history. The
Mona Lisa is first.
